Woodchips and ChipDrop…what a life.
Sunday, August 24.
Woke up again to several missing sunflowers, roses and sweet peas…those damn ninjas, I mean deer. After September, a dog is in my future! There, I said it. It will happen. The Humane Society has so many cute pups right now; I have been looking everyday.
Almost 100 degrees this weekend. Nice little summer heatwave to remind us Washingtonians how much we hate the heat and look forward to the fall. If you are ever unsure if a person is from Washington, just wait….we will comment about the weather: either too hot or too cold, not enough rain when we want it, not enough sun, maybe too windy…it is never right for us.
I went to San Diego recently (love that city) and while I was away, ChipDrop supplied me with yards of woodchips! Have you heard of ChipDrop? A company that contracts with local landscapers to dispose of woodchips to people in the area. It is great! Check em out: www.getchipdrop.com.
What does one do with so many woodchips? Several things. Primarily, I am turning an oval-shaped grassy area into beds for planting. As you can see below, it is quite full!
I transplanted several goodies this year, starting February or so: irises, bee balm, milkweed, sunflowers, sweet peas, dahlias, lilac (!!!), some random yellow flowers I snagged with my sister in Olympia, nasturtiums, a few others that I don’t recall their name, chives, apple and pear tree (the deer love this tree), a canna lily, wild roses from the lower half of my property, a few new roses, Elliot my eucalyptus (thriving! adding more this year) and several pumpkins. I am certain I missed something…

As fall and winter are right around the corner, I have begun prepping the garden for winter: pulling out dead plants, laying the woodchips out to prevent weeds, pulling down the t-posts and fishing line, labeling the dahlias, collecting seeds (sweet pea, nasturtiums and soon sunflower) and brainstorming for next year.
End of August already…time and life are flying. More adventures to come in September….until next time, folks.
