Snails & slugs & moles, oh my!

in Planting Updates

May 19, 2025.

May showers have arrived!

The slugs and snails are of a different breed this year.  I am definitely not waking up early on rainy days, heading out to the flower field and checking on my little baby starts with a flashlight…no, definitely not doing that.  I also did not scare two deer away at 4am when I was awake checking on said slugs and snails.  My moles…they come and go throughout the year.  I have started pouring vinegar on their mounds of dirt, they do not like that smell! Success as I am trying to avoid using chemicals.

My dahlias are coming right along!  Ohhh I would say at least 80 plants have popped out of the soil! Loving it.  These blooms will be available for purchase in the Longview/Kelso area!  Locations to be announced soon.

The white calla lilies have been beautiful this year.  After buying our property in fall of 2019, I have been moving these calla lilies to better locations.  And this is the first year they are really thriving.  Planted some dark purple/black calla lilies in two locations; starting to sprout some green now and hoping they will in fact be that color.

Ever expanding is my peony collection.  The coral charms are another show-stopper this year; they are in the very early stages of opening.  I also discovered how terrible they smell when opened!  I planted a few new peonies this year, for a total of eight.  Two are showing beautiful light coral/peach color; can’t wait to see them opened.

Several of my sweet peas I left over winter, to see if they would survive, not because I was too lazy to pull them…And golly gee did they make it.  Beautiful flowers and they smell so sweet!  The sweet peas I planted in the ground this spring are growing very slowly…hoping these consistently rainy days will encourage more growth!  I know sweet pea starts are very temperamental to get going, but will take off after the early stages.

Not wanting to forget the indoor plants…they are also looking pretty amazing right now.  Consolidated Plants created a new product, for customers to pick their own houseplant bundles.  Head on over to the store page and see what plants (an option of 14!) would fit well in your space.
